US 'setting example for energy efficiency'

The US government is currently leading the way in terms of energy-saving initiatives for state-owned and commercial buildings, it has been claimed.

Welsh newspaper the Western Mail states that while the UK continues to pioneer renewable power generation with its offshore windfarms and other projects, the US is out in front when it comes to reducing energy consumption.

Writer Dylan Jones-Evans explains: "There is actually not one offshore wind farm anywhere in the US, despite the recent efforts of some developers.

"Instead, billions of dollars of investment in the US are being spent on energy efficiency, especially in 'retrofitting' existing buildings with energy-saving devices."

Mr Jones-Evans recently spent time on the east coast of the US and was impressed by the way that major cities such as New York have embraced the concept of green business opportunities.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is aiming to cut the city's carbon emissions by 30 per cent before 2030 using the largest municipal fleet of alternative fuel vehicles in the country.

Earlier this year, officials at the Empire State Building began work on a $500 million energy-saving retrofit that is expected to reduce power consumption at the world's most famous office building by nearly 40 per cent.
