US city receives grant for energy-saving initiatives
The Illinois city of Naperville has been awarded funding for new energy-saving measures by the US Department of Energy.
In a development that could create business opportunities for companies making energy-efficient changes to their operations, the city will receive almost $1.4 million to promote energy-saving projects in offices and homes.
According to the Naperville Sun, local businesses will be eligible for an interest-free loan programme to facilitate new energy-saving initiatives.
In addition, a commercial grant system to provide funding for organisations making energy-efficient improvements will be set up, while energy-saving LED lighting is set to be installed at the city's new fire station.
Situated within the Chicago metropolitan area, Naperville was last year ranked third in Money magazine's annual list of the best small US cities to live in.
Elsewhere in the US, the Massachusetts city of Springfield recently revealed plans to use a $1.5 million federal stimulus grant for energy-saving measures.
According to masslive.com, Springfield mayor Domenic Sarno said that the funding will help to improve the energy efficiency of the city's buildings.
