UK urged to refocus policy to spur investment in clean energy

Greener living business opportunities in the UK are being jeopardised by a "disjointed" government policy on energy that is too focused on wind power, business leaders have said.

According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the current approach is making the ability to meet carbon reduction targets difficult because incentives are being focused on wind power at the expense of other energy-saving solutions.

The CBI has now called upon the government to review its policies by ensuring there is a balanced energy mix that not only encourages investment in wind, but other renewables such as nuclear, gas and clean coal.

CBI deputy director general John Cridland said: "The government's disjointed approach is deterring the private sector investment needed to get our energy system up to scratch, bolster security and cut emissions.

"With firms putting the finishing touches to their future investment plans, we need to act now if we are to achieve an energy system that is low-carbon, secure and sustainable."

According to the BBC, a spokesman for the department of energy and climate change said that "costly, unnecessary barriers" to investment are being removed.
