Tesco launches energy-saving outlet in Shanghai
UK-based supermarket chain Tesco has opened its second energy-saving store in Shanghai.
Located in Wanda Plaza in Zhoupu, the outlet covers 18,000 square metres and will use approximately 25 per cent less power than a normal branch thanks to various energy-saving measures.
According to the China Knowledge website, the new store will save Tesco up to RMB 1.2 million (£110,830) per year.
The firm now has 66 branches across China, with ten of these stores making use of innovative energy-saving techniques.
Founded in east London in 1919, Tesco is currently the third largest global retailer in terms of revenue, behind US giant Wal-Mart and France's Carrefour.
A recent report from ethicalcorp.com revealed that Carrefour is planning major investment in energy efficiency among its Chinese stores next year.
The company has 139 outlets in the country and will attempt to significantly reduce its power consumption by exploring new energy-efficient methods of lighting, air-conditioning and refrigeration.
