Smart metering energy saving programme should be 'faster'
Speeding up the implementation of the government's new smart metering scheme will not only help consumers to be in charge of their energy consumption, but also create energy saving business opportunities.
This has been stated by shadow energy minister Charles Hendry, who was expressing his party's "frustration" with the speed of the programme's implementation, according to New Energy Focus.
"Smart meters will have great benefits in terms of energy efficiency and the environment and they will facilitate micro generation," he is quoted by the publication as stating.
"If people start using them constructively and sensibly they will make significant reductions indeed. That is the sort of change that we all want to see," the MP said at a debate at Westminster Hall.
The smart meter rollout, which was announced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change in May, is expected to transform domestic energy consumption and the whole exercise is projected to come to fruition by 2020.
