Renewable energy sector could create jobs and energy saving business opportunities

Renewable energy sector could create jobs and energy saving business opportunities Energy saving business opportunities and thousands of jobs for skilled workers could be created in the renewable energy sector over the next decade, according to UK trade union Unite.

The union has claimed that if the UK government supports initiatives to promote clean energy for Britain, some 10,000 manufacturing jobs could be created over the next ten years.

Speaking at its energy conference in London, Unite's national officer Dougie Rooney argued that UK manufacturing companies will have huge opportunities to expand as demand from power generation companies increases.

"Nuclear power, clean coal and carbon capture technology is key to meeting our future energy needs while reducing carbon dioxide emissions," he said at the conference.

"With the right support from the UK government, Britain could become the centre for a global engineering supply chain - 10,000 skilled manufacturing jobs could be created as a result."

According to ScottishPower chief executive Nick Horler, the company has a new retrofittable Carbon Capture and Storage technology that could spur a new industry "that has the potential to be as big as North Sea Oil".
