New green business opportunities presented to US women

A US group has called for more business opportunities to be created for women in the green energy sector.

According to the Business and Professional Women's (BPW) Foundation, the nation's emerging economy for energy-saving opportunities will be boosted thanks to $60,000 of new grants.

The money will be shared around four organisations, which will put it towards the training of women in green jobs.

Roslyn Ridgeway, chair of the BPW Foundation, said: "Women are underrepresented in 'green' and 'greener' sector jobs and we are focusing our efforts to make sure women are trained, recruited and retained for the sustainable jobs of the future."

She added that green jobs often pay more than those in other sectors, meaning that an influx of female employees would also help to improve wages for women.

As well as improving the career prospects of women, the initiative also intends to provide new business opportunities for employers by increasing the diversity of the US workforce.

In other news, the former head of BP Lord Browne of Madingley recently claimed that banks which have been bailed out by the government should contribute towards the funding of energy-saving opportunities.
