Malaysian government urged to lead energy-saving campaigns
The public can be convinced to pursue energy-saving measures and become greener if government departments lead by example, the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has said.
Such a strategy should be part of initiatives adopted to save energy, according to Johor Process Systems Engineering Centre director Professor Dr Zainuddin Abdul Manan, the Malaysian National News Agency reports.
The university don said that awareness programmes and campaigns can be spearheaded by government officials, who can show the public the economic, social and environmental benefits of going green.
Speaking to government department heads during a talk dubbed Sustainable Energy Management, Dr Zainuddin also said that Malaysia needs to increase its exploitation of renewable energy sources.
Dr Zainuddin's calls could result in green business opportunities emerging in the country as consumers adopt energy-saving products in order to reduce their power consumption.
News website Malaysiakini.com this week called on the government to step up conservation and affordable renewable energy provision, which it described as the only way to combat climate change.
