Kentucky governor announces funding for energy-saving projects

State-owned buildings in the US state of Kentucky are set to become more energy efficient thanks to an injection of economic stimulus money from the federal government.

According to Kentucky newspaper the Daily News, state governor Steve Beshear recently announced the availability of $18.75 million for energy-saving improvements and more funding is expected to follow next year.

The money will represent Kentucky's 'Green Bank', offering low-interest loans which can then be paid back through the energy savings.

If Governor Beshear is successful in pursuing more stimulus cash in the 2010 General Assembly session, next year the loan scheme could be extended to local government buildings and schools.

The Daily News reports that Kentucky Educational Television looks set to be one of the first applicants for Green Bank funding, as it plans to seek a loan of $1.25 million to install energy-efficient lighting and appliances, smart energy temperature controls and other energy-saving measures.

Meanwhile, Governor Beshear is due to host a conference of energy experts and local business members at the Lexington Convention Center from September 30th to October 1st.
