Jamaica gets grant for energy-saving programmes

Green business opportunities could emerge in Jamaica following news that the government has received a grant for energy efficiency and conservation initiatives.

Jamaica's government has signed an agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank, which will see the organisation provide $437,500 (£265,000) for a Conservation Technical Assistance programme.

The grant is aimed at helping the government improve efficiency in the public sector, cut its carbon emissions and pave the way for technical cooperation that will allow more funds to be made available.

"The government, as you know, is virtually the largest business in town and so government needs to lead by example in terms of energy efficiency," said the finance and public service minister Audley Shaw.

"We need conservation for savings, so that we can divert resources to other critical areas of public sector financing."

The move could benefit companies and individuals interested in exploiting conservation business opportunities, which are emerging as the public becomes more aware of the need to save energy and cut CO2 emissions.
