Indian conservation initiative could spur green business opportunities
Energy-saving business opportunities are set to arise in India following plans by towns in the state of Tamil Nadu to cut electricity usage.
Some 29 towns in the state are to invest in energy-saving measures as part of the scheme, which is being promoted by the government and supported by the private sector, according to the Times of India.
The publication states that chairmen and engineers of the 29 municipalities participating in the scheme have undergone training to ensure they are able to implement the plans.
"Energy-saving companies will design, finance and implement energy efficiency projects, install and maintain energy efficient equipment and ensure that the project has the guaranteed amount of energy," officials told the newspaper.
India is currently campaigning for steeper cuts in greenhouse-gas emissions and, together with China, wants rich nation to commit to cutting emissions by 40 per cent from 1990 levels by 2020.
The two countries also want developed nations to foot most of the bill of reducing carbon emissions.
