Greener living business opportunities to be supported by Kenyan government
New energy-saving business opportunities are set to arise in East Africa following the Kenyan government's announcement of far-reaching plans to invest in renewable energy.
Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a former minister of energy, unveiled the plans, which include distributing one million energy-saving light bulbs to households and helping consumers and public institutions get affordable solar water heaters.
"The free distribution of energy-saving bulbs is expected to save 49 megawatts of power," said Mr Odinga, who added that "we are facing an energy crisis that will require us to come up with radical solutions".
Companies interested in exploiting emerging greener living opportunities in the country will also get support from the government, which will provide interest-free loan facilities for investment.
The announcement of the initiatives came as the leader announced a National Task Force on Accelerated Development of Green Energy, whose main remit will be to spearhead the renewable energy generation in the country.
Kenya's electricity generating company recently announced the closure of its Masinga dam hydroelectric plant due to prolonged drought.
