Greener living business opportunities set to arise in Asia
In a move that could result in greener living business opportunities in Asia, experts have warned that the continent is the main driver of climate change in the world due to rapidly growing economies.
Apart from being the most populous continent, Asia is home to China and India, which are two of the fastest growing economies globally as well as being great polluters, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) stated at a conference in the Philippines.
The organisation's president Haruhiko Kuroda warned that gas emissions from the continent could rise to more than 40 per cent of the world's total emissions by 2030 and more needs to be done to reverse the situation.
"Rapid development has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty while bringing the region as a whole to higher living standards," he told an ADB forum on climate change.
"Along with this economic expansion, however, has been a rise in environmental pollution including greenhouse gas emissions," he said, adding that remedial measures should be taken now.
Nearly half of the world's total carbon emissions come from the US and China.
