Greener living business opportunities 'key to prosperity'
Greener living business opportunities should be supported because they have the potential to create employment opportunities as well as help to save the environment.
This was stated this week in a speech at Mansion House by chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling, who argued that the businesses hold the key to the country's success and prosperity.
He said successful companies are needed "in renewable energy, where we have to build on our natural advantages and know-how to create tens of thousands of high-skilled jobs – and help the world combat climate change".
"Green energy will be key to spreading prosperity in a sustainable way, and in meeting commitments that must be agreed at Copenhagen later this year."
Meeting the 2020 renewable energy targets could result in the creation of around 2.8 million jobs in the green energy sector.
This was the conclusion of a European Commission study on the impact of renewable energy policy on economic growth and employment within the EU.
