Going green can create business opportunities and jobs

Encouraging consumers to make energy conservation their main priority could result in the creation of energy-saving business opportunities and jobs in the UK, according to Friends of the Earth Cymru.

Speaking to Wales Online, the organisation's spokesman Haf Elgar explained that this will not only have economic benefits but will also reduce emissions and help avert climate change.

In addition to investing in their own green measures, local authorities should take the responsibility of encouraging businesses and residents to go green for the sake of the environment, he added.

"Councils have a big say over local energy, housing, waste and transport and it is crucial that they use their powers to cut carbon emissions," he told the website.

Friends of the Earth is campaigning for councils to commit to cutting carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2020 and outline how they are going to achieve this by publishing their action plans.

Such a move could result in the creation of more green business opportunities as consumers adopt energy-saving measures and invest in green products.
