Enigin Update - Unspent Millions Available for Energy Efficiency Projects

PLANS for energy efficiency of across the European Union (EU) could benefit from €115 million in unspent EU funds.

In 2009 The European Energy Recovery programme (EERP) was launched with the aim of encouraging economic recovery through support for cross-border electricity and gas inter-connectors, offshore wind parks, and carbon capture and storage projects. Energy efficiency seemed to be on the back burner under the programme.

The European Parliament wanted energy efficiency projects included in the programme but were unsuccessful, what they did get as a compromise was a promise that any unspent funds could be used on energy efficiency.

Out of the planned €3.98 billion spending under the programme for this year €115 million has not been committed and hence could now be redirected to energy efficiency projects.

The funds would be targeted at projects with “a rapid, measurable and substantial impact on economic recovery, increased energy security and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions”.

Enigin Distributors across the EU can help many public and private sector energy efficiency projects to benefit by offering leading edge energy efficiency and management solutions who can now benefit from the chance of extra funding.

For the future the European Parliament is to vote on a rule change allowing the funds to be reallocated in October.
