Enigin Update - UN Chief Calls for More Investment in Sustainability
U.N. SECRETARY General, Ban Ki-moon called for governments and the private sector to increase investment in sustainable energy and energy efficiency to combat climate change and energy poverty.
Ban Ki-moon spoke at the opening of the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi today which also sees the global launch of 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.
Ban Ki-moon told delegates that he wants to see renewable energy use, in all forms, double worldwide by 2030. He also called for a doubling of the rate of energy efficiency as part of what he called the “Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.”
Ban said: “This is the right time for the initiative. Across the world, we see momentum building for concrete action that reduces energy poverty, catalyzes sustainable growth and mitigates climate change. Achieving sustainable energy is both feasible and necessary.
“Our planet is heating. We need to turn down this global thermostat,” said Ban, highlighting the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2050 to avoid dangerous changes to the climate.
