Enigin Update - UK CRC Scheme to be Simplified

THE UK Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) will simplify the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme to lessen the burden on businesses, according to UK climate change minister Greg Barker.

Barker pointed to the success of the first year of the CRC scheme (Carbon Reduction Commitment), with many UK businesses now identifying and recording their energy use.

He states that simplification of the scheme will provide "greater business certainty by continuing the fixed price sales into the second phase (rather than auctions of allowances in a capped system).".

Now, the DECC will start a consultation document to fine tune the details of the proposal before businesses can submit their thoughts on the changes.

Some have called for the scrapping of the scheme, and other for a harder line, but it is accepted that this scheme or something in a similar form is vital for the UK to be able meet its own carbon reduction targets.

A new report released by the Committee on Climate Change revealed three percent increase in UK emissions last year, further adding that to meet carbon reduction targets efforts must be ramped up.
