Enigin Update - UK Building Bosses call for Compulsory Energy Efficiency Data

SOME of the UKs leading property bosses are calling for the British Government to force commercial landlords to publish the energy efficiency of their buildings.

A letter from CEOs of British Land, Land Securites and Hammerson and signed by the developer of the Olympic Village, Lend Lease, called for the Prime Minister, David Cameron, to set a "level playing field" claiming that if action isn’t taken the green credentials of buildings will never be improved.

The Daily Telegraph reports on the move by these top UK property figures, adding that non-domestic buildings in the UK, such as offices, shopping centres, hospitals and schools, account for 17 percent of the country's carbon emissions. But the paper points out that at present, only public sector buildings are bound to provide the Display Energy Certificates (DECs), which displays a buildings energy efficiency scaled from A to G, A being the most efficient.

The Telegraph reveals that the letter was initiated by the British Property Federation along with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), with the wish that DECs be made compulsory for private sector buildings as well during the discussion of the Energy Bill in the UK Parliament today.

The letter says: "Unfortunately, a voluntary approach to take up in the private sector will not work, because without that level playing field there is a reputational risk for those businesses that voluntarily adopt certification and achieve poor ratings."

Chief executive of the UKGBC, Paul King, added: "It's very simple – if you don't know how much energy you are using, you can't manage it."

Enigin Distributors across the UK, and worldwide, supply Eniscope Real-time and Analytics from Enigin Plc, which provides real-time and analytical energy data, displaying the information, if need be, in public areas of a building or facility.

Enigin Plc's Eniscope allows control and management of energy use leading to savings, and with related technology from Enigin can it can further save energy demand and costs, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
