Enigin Update - Taiwan's Success in Exceeding Energy Efficiency Target
TAIWAN’S government set a target to gradually turn the nation into a low-carbon community and that goal has been boosted by a 4 percent energy efficiency increase in 2010.
This success, doubling the targeted 2 percent improvement, was announced by Taiwan’s Bureau of Energy (BOE) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs today, with an unnamed official stating:
“The nation’s energy efficiency increased at a rapid pace last year, thanks to the government’s energy-saving plans and the active desire by the public to reduce carbon emissions.
“The high price of energy worldwide played a part in the improvement as well,” the official added.
The Cabinet-level Environmental Protection Administration added:
“Issues such as reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and climate change have led people to understand the importance of saving energy,”
To challenge climate change, the Taiwan government designated 2010 an Energy-Conservation and Carbon-Reduction Year.
The government also formulated the General Plan for National Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction, which commits Taiwan to increasing its energy efficiency by 2 percent per-annum between 2008 and 2015.
