Enigin Update - Taipei Has World's Officially Certified Greenest Tall Building

THE TAIPEI 101, a 1,667-foot tower, has earned the highest US Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, for energy efficiency and environmental design.

The LEED certification means that the tower is officially recognised as the world's tallest green building, with the full title of the award: Platinum Level Certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — Existing Building Operation and Maintenance (LEED-EBOM)

“The accreditation recognises the top-standard environmental commitment of Taipei 101, making the building a pride of Taiwan and a model for others to follow,” said Premier Wu Den-yih during his remark at the award ceremony yesterday.

Taipei 101′s building automation and energy efficiency have been optimised over the past two years to achieve a 10-percent saving in electricity usage, along with other sustainable targets, resulting in a 30 percent less energy consumption in comparison to an average building.

The China Post reports that according to Taipei 101's Chairman, Harace Lin, the building has achieved annual savings of 14.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to $1.2 million, or an 18 percent energy-saving over the past three years since the project was first launched.

Lin estimates the cost it took to reach the top environmental standard certificate will be paid back within a couple of years from the energy savings.

Amongst the actions taken the tower's cooling system had improved algorithms applied to the chiller plant which changed the sequence of operation, as well as through energy audits, commissioning services, energy modelling as well as the installation of additional sensors.

Enigin plc offer a range of energy efficiency technology to enable buildings to substantially improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions and costs - including ACES which can produce dramatic energy saving in many air-con systems through altering algorithms of chilling units.

Enigin's solutions are available through Enigin Distributors globally.

Completed in 2004, the 101-story TAIPEI 101 is the second-tallest building in the world, surpassed only by the 2,717-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
