Enigin Update - Sustainability at Centre of Irish Government's Recovery
THE Irish government released today their draft paper ‘Framework for Sustainable Development’ which will state that the “green economy” must be at the centre of Government policy.
The paper is published by the Irish Department of the Environment and aims to affect policy over the next 10 years to combat climate change and other environmental concerns.
The draft proposes the development of a green economy is important for the countries recovery up to 2020, and highlights the development of energy efficiency, energy-efficiency technologies, renewable energy, and waste and water management.
The Irish Times reports that the 92-page report states, “Green growth is needed because risks to development are rising as growth continues to erode natural capital.”
The times also reports the paper warns of the consequences of continuing with the “business-as-usual” model “if left unchecked” would mean “greater pollution, climate change and irreversible biodiversity loss. If we want to ensure that the improvement in living standards over the past 50 years is maintained, we have to find new ways of production and consumption.”
The draft paper acknowledges that previously there was a “lack of effective co-operation between departments and the different levels of Government”, so reports the Times.
The Framework also revealed that some companies have been forward thinking as regards the green agenda, many others have lagged behind. It hence concludes that tt is “crucial” to engage the business sector to engage them to consider sustainability.
The draft document also calls for Ireland to move ever forward in becoming an “innovative, low-carbon and resource-efficient society”.
The Times reports Hogan as acknowledging the amount of work to be achieved: “Making sure that economic growth is decoupled from resource use is just one example of where further progress is required.
“The ‘business as usual’ model is no longer fit for purpose if we’re to put Ireland on a low carbon, climate resilient and economically competitive path,” he concluded.
Irish based Enigin Distributors are already helping many businesses and organisations to become sustainable through improved energy efficiency, reducing emissions and saving on energy costs by utilising technology and solutions from Enigin..
