Enigin Update - Survey Reveals Energy Efficiency a Major Concern for Businesses
OVER two-thirds of companies worldwide anticipate energy prices will rise. Many believe the rise will be in double figures, these findings come from a survey of 2,882 companies conducted by the Institute for Building Efficiency, set up by Johnson Controls.
The survey revealed that many business have made or are seriously considering efforts to cut premises and facilities costs through energy efficient retrofits.
Clay Nesler, of Johnson Controls, speaking about the survey results, said:
"People consistently are expecting double-digit increases in energy prices and of course that is the key driver for energy improvement.”
Cost saving is the main driver for energy efficiency investments, with the universal factor that most companies wish investment in energy efficiency to pay for itself within three years.
Governmental incentives, concerns over the environment and public image are listed in the survey as other motivators for businesses to take energy saving measures.
The survey also revealed that the “low-hanging fruit” for many businesses were training building superintendents to be aware of efficiencies and changing to energy-efficient lighting, which many have done or are considering, while about a third of those surveyed, are already making larger investments in energy efficient equipment and controls and renewable energy systems.
Reuters, in reporting on the survey, quoted Steve Winter, a building systems consultant who had no role in the survey:
"There are many, many energy savings opportunities in existing buildings that could cut energy costs by 20 to 40 percent.”
Winter also stated that the payback in reduced energy costs achieved from such investments is sometimes based on uncertain projections, which act as a deterrent to some company leaders.

The survey covering 10 countries worldwide revealed global differences in energy-efficiency priorities, as Nesler explains:
“Despite the recession, decision-makers have put efficiency high on their agendas for 2010, especially those in India and China. It’s encouraging to see that the financial returns and environmental benefits of energy efficiency investments are recognized in all regions around the world.”
The survey discovered that over the next 12 months 63 percent of respondents plan to make capital investments in energy efficiency and 70 percent plan operating budget expenditures in efficiency programs with 85 percent planning to make efficiency a priority in their new construction and retrofit projects.
