Enigin Update - Substantial Savings Available Through Improving Motor Efficiency
UK INDUSTRY could save over £630 million through making electric motors more energy efficient, using motor controllers such as variable speed drives (VSDs), according to the UK’s Carbon Trust.
The Carbon Trust reveal through the release of new guides how businesses can make significant savings on their annual energy bill by improving the energy efficiency of motors, where there is plenty of potential for substantial savings.
In the industrial sector for example, a medium sized business with an electricity spend of £50,000 could save £5,000 per year by fitting VSDs, such as Enigin plc’s iMEC range, available exclusively from your local Enigin Distributor. Fans and pumps don’t often need to work at 100 percent capacity – by using iMEC to slow them down by only 20 percent, you can save up to an impressive 50 percent on their energy use.
Electric motors account for over two thirds of British industry’s electricity consumption and approximately 40 percent of all electricity consumption globally. The annual running costs of a single motor can be ten times the purchase cost.
The Carbon Trust outline how sectors such as the UK food and drink industry could save up to £70 million per year by installing motor controllers such as iMEC and improving the efficiency of motors. Other sectors such as plastics, rubber and chemicals could collectively save up to £270 million annually.
Richard Rugg, Director of Carbon Trust Programmes, said, “There is a massive £640 million to be saved if businesses can get their approach to motors and drives right. While it’s sometimes easy to overlook, simple steps can make a big difference to energy costs. Adopting the measures outlined in these guides will have a direct impact on your business bottom line.”
