Enigin Update - Sri Lanka Recognise Importance of Energy Efficiency
THE President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa gave an address at the Energy Awards Ceremony at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on Tuesday where several corporate bodies received awards for energy efficiency innovations.
Rajapaksa said the Government will place special focus on environment-friendly and energy saving power generation to bring benefits to the consumer.
More than 85 percent of the Sri Lanka is provided with electricity today and so there is a heavy demand on the national grid. Rapid industrialisation within the country and the development projects that have been undertaken by the Government in the post-war reconstruction all make for soaring power demands.
There are more power generation sources that are needed within the country to meet the present demand and the government recognises that it is equally important to keep in mind the need for conservation and energy saving.
Today power takes up a very high percentage of overhead costs in production and manufacture of consumer goods resulting in inflated prices.
When steps are taken to reward the corporate sector energy conservation and becoming energy efficient, those efforts should be lauded. When energy efficient technologies and methods are adopted by companies, cost of production will be reduced thus benefiting the consumer.
Energy saving and efficiency profits the public directly and indirectly, as well as the company, the government and other organisations.
President Rajapaksa said “we should go for more profitable and environment-friendly power generation which could bring more benefits to the consumers.”
Many companies apply methods to conserve energy and become energy efficient. Such actions by companies mean they are able to recieive special incentives granted by way of tax rebates. Therefore benefiting the company further.
