YESTERDAY the Spanish government revealed an energy-efficiency plan to save nearly €11.48 billion ($16.4 billion) and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 36.4 million tons by 2020.
Development Minister Jose Blanco presented the plan, stating that the aim is in part to cut Spain's dependence on foreign energy at this time of sky-high oil prices.
Blanco said that the government is to introduce 71 new initiatives and strengthen 29 that are already in place.
One of Spain’s energy-saving initiatives focuses on public buildings, with an energy certification programme, tax incentives for energy efficiency upgrades, including converting to LED lighting and increasing renewable energy generation.
Nationally, the Spanish highway system and sea ports will see improvement in lighting systems, which will be made more efficient.
