Enigin Update - South Africa Reliant on Increased Energy Efficiency
SOUTH AFRICAN government minister Sibusiso Ndebele said today that energy efficiency is vital for the countries progress and crucial for the next few years..
Business Report detailed Transport Minister Ndebele’s words to the media on behalf of the infrastructure cluster of ministries.
“Energy efficiency will play an increasingly important role in our country going forward, and is crucial if we are to see the next two to three years through in the context of a constrained electricity supply-demand balance,” Ndebele said.
Ndebele added that Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, had spent 75.5 billion rand ($10.3 billion) on its capital investment programme since 2005 and had delivered about 5,031 megawatts (MW) of new electricity-generating capacity into the system and thousands of kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines, but still the country faces under capacity.
Hence, Eskom still have much investment to do to achieve the required power capacity across South Africa, with suspected power outs over the next few years, leading to the need for more energy efficiency.
