Enigin Update - Serbia's Potential for Energy Efficiency and Rnewables

SERBIAN Deputy Prime Minister, Verica Kalanovic, said that Serbia has significant potential in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

Kalanovic, speaking at the opening of an energy efficiency and renewable conference in Kragujevac, commended the many Serbian municipalities who had completed energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

She also warned that the country would have to import a significantly greater amount of energy if it doesn’t turn to alternative sources, such as energy efficiency and renewables, as non-renewable sources of energy in Serbia are modest.

The Serbian government declared 2011 the year of energy efficiency, with subsidies available for many projects.

23 municipalities that have prepared the necessary documentation for 43 projects were at the conference, along with various banks, who will present loan and financing terms to project leaders.

Jovanka Arsic-Karisic, chair of the Management Board of the Central European Development Forum (CEDEF), revealed that the total value of all documented projects exceeds €150 million, with individual project values between €70,000 to €90 million.

Arsic-Karisic said that the proposed projects are diverse, covering several areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, from mini-hydroelectric power plants, lighting and geothermal springs, noting that the future of these projects will depend on agreement between investors and the municipalities.
