Enigin Update - Punjab Lowers the Lights

THE Punjab government, India, have announced an energy efficiency policy for public premises that will see equipment and lighting switched off or dimmed.

Approval has been given for the policy by senior ministers, leaving the Services & General Administration Department, the Industries department, Divisional Commissioners and District Coordination Officers to start implementing the policy with immediate effect.

In public offices, the policy will allow the use of air conditioners in public offices, but only from 11am with thermostats set at 26 degrees C and for 50 percent of lighting to used. The policy also rules that computers, printers and lights must be switched off as soon as officials leave their offices.

The Punjabi government has requested that local governments, Tehsil Municipal Administrations (an administrative division) and Development authorities to apply the policy.

As part of this far reaching policy, illumination on billboards, neon-signs and hoardings have been disallowed, but it will not be applied to those powered by solar panels. Also decorative lighting on buildings, trees, fountains and canals will be eliminated.

Illumination of compressed natural gas stations, petrol pumps and outer lighting of major restaurants will have to be decreased to a minimum, with the police, local governments and highway patrols authorised to act against anyone not adhering to the policy.

Enigin Distributors in India can help many public bodies and local authorities to save energy and lower costs by automating much of their electrical systems through using Enigin plc's intelligent controls for such things as lighting, motors, air conditioners and refrigeration.
