Enigin Update - Power Boost but Energy Efficiency still Focus for Visayas
THE PHILIPPINES’ central islands area of Visayas are to have three new power plants to overcome a negative power reserves but energy efficiency still needs to be improved.
Rey Maleza, supervisor of the Energy Industry Management Division of the Department of Energy (DOE) -Visayas Field Office, revealed yesterday that the three new power plants are good news for Visayans, as they are expected to have positive power reserves by the second quarter of next year after the new power plants become fully operational, but energy costs will go up,
Despite the increased power capacity, the higher costs and looking to the future led to Maleza along with other DOE officials calling for increased energy efficiency at a press conference in Bacolod City yesterday.
The statements are inline with the Philippines DOE December being National Energy Consciousness Month, with the catchy theme “Towards Energy Access for More Through Energy Efficiency and Conservation.”
A statement from the DOE regarding the scheme said:
“Energy Efficiency will reduce need for oil imports. Such reduction will lower the capital and operating costs of electricity and will consequently provide Filipinos with sufficient electricity at lower possible costs.
“For companies increased energy efficiency means more savings and profit, which will lead to greater company stability, more jobs and competitive markets,” it added.
The DOE also stressed that energy efficiency also means less environmental harm.
