Enigin Update - Philippines to set new Energy Efficiency Standards
THE Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) is to develop new standards for energy efficiency before the end of 2011, the agency’s top official said.
Jose Rene Almendras, Energy Secretary, revealed the intention after an uproar from industry calling for updated guidelines on energy efficient technology and equipment.
Almendras stated: “We’re going to push for it as fast as we can. We should have something by the end of the year.”
He added that talks on these new standards have already been carried out throughout the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), “Discussion still continues and we hope to come to an agreement. There is an ASEAN initiative to come up with a common standard for appliances.”
Almendras revealed that the ASEAN members decided to set common standards.
Raul Concepcion, chief executive of CCAC pressed the DOE for the review as current standards are more than a decade old.
Concepcion said he is concerned that the DOE is so absorbed in addressing the challenge of oil prices that they miss the opportunities for energy efficiency.
Enigin Distributors across the Philippines provide energy efficiency technology and solutions from Enigin to help the private and public sectors to control their energy use and identify where they are wasting energy and which equipment consumes more energy and may need upgrading - this may involve capital costs but the savings on energy costs produce a rapid return on investment.
