Enigin Update - Nigeria Needs to Concentrate on Energy Efficiency

THE United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has opined that Nigeria needs to concentrate on energy efficiency to meet their current and future energy challenges.

Nigeria’s Leadership newspaper reports that the UNDP maintained that the energy crisis facing the country requires the development of an energy saving culture, particularly in the corporate world, let alone the general populace.

The paper also reports the words of Etiosa Uyigue, the National Project Coordinator of the UNDP/Global Environment Facility (GEF) energy efficiency programme, who explained that using energy saving technology would save Nigeria significant amounts of energy.

Nigerian Enigin Distributors have cutting edge energy efficiency technology and systems from Enigin, which can convert the country's commercial, industrial and public sectors from energy wasters into energy savers, reducing energy demand, energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Uyigwe revealed that the Nigerian government spends around $1 million to generate one megawatt of electricity, adding that if the country promoted an energy efficiency policy, it could save 38MW to 40MW.

He criticised Nigeria’s government for concentrating solely on increasing energy generation, counseling policy makers to focus on laws that would enforce energy efficiency, leading to savings and the lessening the need for major capital investment in new power plants.

“The focus has been on generation, but while generating, you also address efficiency, we are trying to tell the policy makers that you can get more, using less,” he said.
