Enigin Update - Nigeria needs to become Energy Efficient
THE Director-General of Energy Commission of Nigeria, Professor Abubakar Sambo, has emphasised the need for energy efficiency and conservation in the country.
Professor Sambo highlighted this need at the official commissioning and the foundation laying ceremony of the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation in Lagos.
Sambo reveled to his audience that energy efficiency and conservation will stimulate the economic growth of Nigeria by reducing energy cost as well as increasing energy access by supplying conserved energy to other consumers.
He also explained that energy efficiency and conservation will enhance production of goods and services, as more businesses will have improved access to energy supply and save on non-renewable resources for future generation.
Professor Sambo said his commission has initiated programmes and projects aimed at implementing the energy efficiency and conservation component of the National Energy Policy [NEP]. According to him, among the steps taken in this direction is the establishment of the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the University of Lagos.
"It is believed that with the creation of the Centre, situated in the industrial and commercial centre of the nation, the Energy Centre will stimulate the penetration and acceptance of energy efficiency and conservation practices, as well as develop, on a continuous basis, energy efficiency and conservation methods and technologies for dissemination and application in national energy usage and practices."
