Enigin Update - Nigeria Must Address Energy Challenge

NIGERIA needs to develop its power supply if it wishes to become a top 20 world economy according to United States Agency for International Development (USAID), mission director, Dana Mansuri.

Inconsistent power for the nations businesses, hospitals and schools. let alone households, hits a nations economy and production. Mansuri disclosed that only 36 percent of the Nigerian population has access to grid-generated electricity, when she addressed the First National Forum on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and Conservation, organized by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), in Abuja.

She added: “This is a huge supply gap for a country that owns such tremendous resources. This lack of electricity has led to another 60 million Nigerians generating their own electricity, and they have to do this by spending between 5 to 10 times the cost of grid-generated electricity supply on self-generated light and power. For Nigeria to meet its current demand, the electricity supply must quadruple by 2013.”

UNESCO country representative, Dr. Joseph Ngu, highlighted the need for the Nigerian government to develop energy policies that would improvements in energy efficiency and the quality, quantity and conservation of alternative sources of energy.

Ngu revealed that to promote energy efficiency and alternative sources of energy in Nigeria, UNESCO have been collaborating with the ECN and other stakeholders.
