Enigin Update - New EU Law to Meet Energy Efficiency Target
THE European Commission have proposed a new law to push the public and private sector organisations to save energy, putting the EU on track for 20 percent savings by 2020.
The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), said in a statement today: "If nothing changes in the coming years, the EU will achieve only half of the target. This threatens our competitiveness, our fight to reduce CO2 emissions and our security of supply."
According to the new law, energy retailers and distributors will have to achieve energy savings annually equal to 1.5 percent of sales volumes through improving consumers energy efficiency.
The commission explained that they can do this by helping them to improve energy efficiency. National governments can opt for alternative programme as long as they achieve the same results. Public administrations will have the added obligation to reduce energy use by renovating 3 percent of their floor area annually.
An EU official said that dependent on the rate of negotiations between EU member countries and the European Parliament, the law will become binding a year after its adoption, but it could be concluded by autumn 2012.
Enigin Distributors across Europe are helping both the public and private sector organisations to save energy, reduce CO2 emissions and save money through using energy efficiency technology and solutions from Enigin.
