Enigin Update - New Energy Efficiency Legislation for Uganda
THE UGANDAN government is in the process of drafting a bill to enhance energy efficiency across the country, so said State Minister for Energy, Mr Simon D’Ujanga.
D’Ujanga, speaking at the opening of a two-day regional energy efficiency conference in Kampala yesterday, stated:
“When the Bill is passed into law, it will provide the legal framework to support energy efficiency and energy conservation in the country.”
D’ujanga revealed the proposed law would help the Ugandan government to save energy and make it available to many consumers as well as saving on the high costs of generating more electricity.
“In East Africa, only 32 per cent of the urban population and about 5 per cent of the rural population is connected to the national grid. The majority of the population, up to 90 per cent, depends largely on traditional energy sources,” he said.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in partnership with German Technical Cooperation and the European Union Energy Initiative organised the conference that attracted energy experts from East and central Africa to plan for measures of promoting energy efficiency.
