Enigin Update - New Energy Efficiency Building Laws to Boost South Africa
SOUTH Africa’s new Energy Efficiency building regulations will give a boost to the country’s manufacturing sector as well as the economy, according to Rob Davies Trade and Industry Minister.
Davies was speaking at the South African Bureau of Standard (SABS) Convention held at the end of last week and see many positives coming from the new energy efficiency regulation, which comes into force next month.
The new regulations will require that all new buildings, whether it is industrial buildings, hotels, schools or residential, will have to meet minimum energy efficiency requirements.
Davies explained that the energy efficiency regulation requirements would contribute positively towards government's goal of creating five million jobs by 2020.
"Opportunities will be created in the manufacturing sector as well as the installation services....If we achieve this, the estimation is that we can create around 18,000-jobs," said Davies.
According to Davies, the Energy Efficiency building regulations will drive electricity use in a more sustainable manner, encouraging industrial development through sector support and again create more jobs.
Davies added that it will also contribute to the country's green industry and climate change mitigation actions and initiatives.
