Enigin Update - Namibia Looks to Strengthen Energy Efficiency of its Buildings

THE NAMIBIA Energy Efficiency Programme (NEEP) held a workshop on Monday as part of their efforts to implement a much needed energy efficiency buildings strategy for the southern African republic.

"Energy conservation is an unending and all encompassing effort that must be embraced and implemented by all sectors of the society," the Permanent Secretary in the Namibian Ministry of Mines and Energy, Joseph Iita, stated when he opened the workshop.

Iita added that Namibia is realising that traditional energy sources are not only finite, but also need to be conserved.

The permanent secretary, said policies and activities, which promote energy-efficient buildings, will contribute to national goals of energy security, economic efficiency and sustainability.

Enigin Distributors across Africa and the world are helping many companies and public organisations to reduce energy wastage though using energy efficiently, saving money and reducing harmful green house gas emissions.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy teamed up with the Namibia Manufacturers Association to launch a demand side management programme in 2008, identifying several energy efficiency measures that needed to be addressed. It was also decided that all new public buildings should be built with energy efficiency in mind.

"The physical design of buildings undoubtedly affects the energy required for heating, cooling and lighting," Iita added.

AllAfrica.com stated in a report on the workshop that Namibian buildings are generally not designed for efficient use of energy, and that there are currently no regulations or standards that enhance the efficiency of buildings.

NEEP, the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Ministry of Regional and Local Government will be encouraging local authorities to set minimum energy-efficiency requirements for all new buildings.

Enigin Distributors have the ideal retrofit energy saving technology for existing buildings and the perfect energy management solution for new builds, to control and monitor energy use in real-time and efficiently.
