Enigin Update - Mid-point for Battle of the Buildings Energy Efficiency Competition
THE University of Central Florida is currently in the lead out of 245 buildings battling it out in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Starnational building competition.
We reported on the Battle of the Buildings competition earlier in the year but now the EPA have released the halfway point results, which reveal that building in University of Central Florida which has been submitted for the competition has substantially reduced its energy use by just under a third (31 percent).
Over the first six months of the competition the results from all competition participants, across 26 different types of building and 33 states, show energy cost savings of over $3.7 million.
The EPA revealed the following buildings that are in first place among those in their respective categories.
Each building is listed by category and includes the percentage of energy reduced as of the competition midpoint.
• Bank/Financial Institution: USE Credit Union - Corporate - USE Credit Union - Corporate, 20.28%
• Courthouse: U.S. Courthouse - Hammond - U.S. Courthouse - Hammond, 14.30%
• Hospital: St. Mark's Medical Center - St. Mark's Medical Center, 9.85%
• Hotel: The Colonnade Hotel - The Colonnade Hotel, 1.81%
• House of Worship: First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis - First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, 14.21%
• K-12 School: Jackson Creek Middle School - Jackson Creek Middle School, 25.78%
• Medical Office: North Suburban Medical Office Building - North Suburban Medical Office Building, 18.02%
• Office: Scientific Instruments - Scientific Instruments, 30.12%
• Residence Hall/Dormitory: Kenan Residence Hall at UNC Chapel Hill - Kenan Residence Hall at UNC Chapel Hill, 3.20%
• Retail Store: Office Depot - Plano - Office Depot - Plano, 16.77%
• Warehouse: Norandex - Norandex , 8.00%
• Other: Garage C - Garage C, 31.36%
EPA assistant administrator for air and radiation, Gina McCarthy, said regarding the results so far: “Competitors in the second year of the Energy Star Battle of the Buildings are already achieving energy-savings that really pack a punch.”
