Enigin Update - Maldives Need Energy Efficiency for Development

MALDIVES’ President Mohamed Nasheed has called for improvements in energy efficiency plus investment in renewable energy, with the aim of reducing electricity bills and dependence on imported oil.

President Nasheed was addressing the “Eco-Symposium”, held in Baa atoll, which aimed to explore how the travel and tourism industry, vital to the Maldives’ economy, can reduce its green house gas emissions while saving money on energy costs,

The Maldives electricity prices are amongst the world's highest and, according to a 2007 United Nations report, the Indian Ocean island group are the most oil-vulnerable country in Asia.

President Nasheed said his government wants to bring in new building regulations to ensure that buildings are energy efficient, stating that energy efficiency measures are vital to future development, which will be hindered by high energy and environmental costs.

“We have to get away from thinking that development has to cause carbon dioxide emissions,” he said.

“In the Maldives, we want to pursue a low carbon development strategy...so we can develop, create a better life for people and also take care of this planet.”

Enigin Distributors in countries and island groups across the globe are enabling commerce, industry and the public sector to reduce energy bills and wastage through real-time energy management with Eniscope, backed up with the full range of Enigin PLC's energy saving products.
