Enigin Update - Malaysia Forming Energy Efficiency Master Plan
THE Malaysian Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry is developing the National Energy Efficiency Master Plan ensuring energy efficiency across the country.
Minister Datuk Seri Chin Fah Kui said in his address at the Save Our Planet Forum in Kuala Lumpur yesterday:
" I am proud to inform you that the government has approved the implementation of the Renewable Energy Policy and Action Plan starting from the 10th Malaysia Plan,"
"With both plans in place, I anticipate the results will contribute significantly towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Malaysia."
Chin added that his ministry was currently working closely with the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry so that Malaysia's pledge at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen was met, particularly from the energy sector.
He also stated that green technology will be a mainstay on the government’s agenda, becoming a driver of the country's economy.
Chin said that although there seems to be a shift away from reliance on heavy energy consuming industries they are needed for economic growth was essential, hence he felt that Malaysia’s resources need to be used in creative and sustainable ways.
"These technologies will be able to drive high value-added growth with spill over effects. This means more business and job opportunities will be created for the people, which will contribute significantly towards our gross national income," Chin said.
"Currently, we are too dependent on fossil fuels, with 90 per cent of our plants being fueled by gas and coal. We import 100 per cent of our coal requirement while our indigenous gas reserves are depleting," he said.
