Enigin Update - Japanese Businesses Consider Drastic Energy Saving Action
THE ENERGY supply problems continue in Japan after the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant continue to bite into their industry with power outages.
Sony revealed today that they are considering giving all its employees in Japan a two-week summer vacation purely to save energy, amid the power shortages in the aftermath of the March 11 disasters.
A Sony spokesman said that shutting down offices, air conditioners, elevators, and other facilities, could save 25 percent of the power normally consumed during the peak summer months.
"We hope efforts like this will significantly reduce our power consumption," he added.
If the plan goes ahead it will affect 16,000 workers across Japan.

The Japanese government is due to mandate major firms to reduce their power consumption this summer by 25 percent, when power consumption peaks, with the area served by Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) faces shortages of at least 20 percent of demand.
The earth quake and tsunami on March 11, lead to 11 of Japan's 55 nuclear reactors to shut down automatically, while knocking out the cooling systems at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
Sony is also considering altering its business hours from 9:00 am or 9:30 am start to a 8:00 am start, enabling offices to close earlier, the company official said.
Across Japan many energy-saving schemes are being suggested, including major manufacturers taking turns to close their factories, but analysts have warned of the likely slowdown to the Japanese economy during the summer, due to the forced limiting of production because of the power shortfall.
