Enigin Update - Jamaican Government must set Energy Efficiency Lead

JAMAICAN Prime Minister Bruce Golding said that the public sector must set the example and lead the way in energy efficiency.

The Prime Minister added that Jamaica faces severe energy challenges, far beyond most other countries as the island nation depends almost entirely on imported oil for energy. He revealed that Jamaica's Oil imports account for almost 40% of the country's total import bill which opens it up to the volatility of the international oil market.

Golding said the whole country must become engaged in the effort, but that effort must start with government. He made these comments while addressing a workshop on energy saving opportunities within the public sector in Kingston, stating:

“We in the public sector are inefficient users of electricity. We spend $11 billion a year to pay electricity bills for government institutions, our schools, our hospitals, government offices and so on. That represents almost 15% of the total electricity consumed in Jamaica and it ought not to be.”

Golding said that two years ago he mandated that the public sector achieve a 15 percent reduction in energy usage, but he explained he is not convinced that enough effort has been made to achieve this target:

“We have not worked hard enough. We haven't seen the 15% reduction in dollar terms, although this does not mean that there has not been a reduction as the dollar figures will be misleading depending on the value of the dollar.”

Golding said more recently, he requested a check on kilowatt usage to see if there has been any real reduction in electricity consumption but to date he has not received the figures.

Enigin Distributors in Jamaica, and globally, have the ideal solution for the Jamaican Prime Minister with Enigin Plc's Eniscope Real-time and Analytics - which will provide energy use data in real-time in easy to understand graphical reports, along with historical analytical detailed energy data.

Armed with accurate energy use data from Eniscope, decisions on energy efficiency actions can be made based on facts and not assumptions, leading to a quick return on investments in energy saving technology due to substantial energy cost reductions.
