Enigin Update - Ghana's Energy Efficiency Month
GHANA’s Energy Efficiency Month, was launched last Thursday in Accra with the aim of focusin on the nations efforts to save energy, money and the environment.
Mr Kofi Wayo, a board member of Ghana’s Energy Commission (EC), revealed at the launch that the Commission aims to help the country’s industry and commerce to reduce production costs and become increasingly competitive by improving energy efficiency.
Wayo reckons that with the introduction of national energy efficiency standards, Ghana could save $100 million annually.
He explained that one of the core functions of the Commission is to promote energy efficiency, hence the launch of September as the Energy efficiency and conservation month every year, which will help to create awareness on how to use energy efficiently.
Dr A. Ofosu Ahenkorah, the Executive Secretary of the EC, revealed that a significant proportion of electricity generated in Ghana is lost through the use of inefficient equipment and bad habits.
He expressed the view that implementing electricity saving measures will significantly reduce electricity consumption, thereby releasing more electricity for use by others while removing the necessity for building new power plants.
