Enigin Update - Fiji Push their Energy Conservation Efforts
IN THE Pacific island state of Fiji existing energy efficiency initiatives are being ramped up by the government to improve energy efficiency and save money.
The initiatives have been in place for a while, but little has been achieved, hence a push now to educate the population to think about energy conservation and efficiency, with the added emphasis of fuel and energy price rises focussing efforts.
The Fijian Department of Energy (DoE) has been carrying out the energy conservation programme for several years by running a competition for industries, schools, government departments and even households.
Businesses that save the most energy will receive awards from the Fiji Business Excellence Awards scheme, while governmental departments will get awarded with the Public Service Commission award.
Mikaele Balena, DoE senior science officer, commented recently that there has been little participation from the Fijian business sector so far, adding: "The intention of the programme is to raise awareness on energy conservation."
Pranil Singh, the DoE’s bio fuel engineer, has commented that a sustainable energy financing programme was also in place, "People can go to the Australia and New Zealand Bank or the Fiji Development Bank and take a loan to buy a solar panel," he said.
"The World Bank funded program provides 50 per cent guarantee for the loan, which....can [be] slowly repaid over a period of time. There is no application fee and the program indirectly helps in reducing the fuel bill of the country," said Singh.
