Enigin Update - Festival Sheds Light on Energy Efficiency
FROM tigers to jellyfish, the i Light festival in Singapore is designed to show off the assets of energy efficient lighting.
The LED bulbs in the festival lights use seventy percent less energy than regular bulbs and, in businesses translates into sizable savings.
i Light Marina Bay is a free outdoor light art festival that takes place at the Marina Bay waterfront district of Singapore. The creative use of energy-saving lighting technology is demonstrated through light art installations.
12 installations have made use of LED (light-emitting diode) lights which are twice as efficient as compact fluorescent bulbs. One of these is Singapora-Flora by Australian artist Warren Langley, which uses continuous LED light cables. Each petal in this installation runs on only one watt and the spiral shapes run on 5 watts per meter.
LED lights are currently considered as a standard for greener lighting.
Each of the installations at the Festival is accompanied by a "smart fact" about its intelligent and sustainable use of lighting which can be easily adapted to everyday life.
Chris Tobias, a sustainability consultant commenting on the light festival said,
"You can imagine, multiply that across all the different metropolitan areas - the buildings, and their occupants and usage, it would be huge. I mean, you could probably save about five times the amount of energy, if you were using LEDs."
Light Festival Founder and Artistic Director, Mary-Anne Kyriakou stated the first step towards a more energy efficient future is raised awareness.
"A lot of this technology most people would never experience, and it's something which is used on a building, something which may be used to highlight a boat.
“They can see that this technology is being used in a creative, innovative way, opens new possibilities and with that new possibilities is new environments, new objects, new design, new thinking," stated Kyriakou.
Building owners and businesses in Marina Bay and the Central Business District are showing their support of the cause to reduce energy consumption. During the three weeks of the festival, which ends November 7, building owners will be switching off the non-essential lights and/or turning up the air-conditioner temperature in their premises.
This "Switch Off, Turn Up" campaign involving more than 10 properties demonstrates how the business community can come together to make an impact on the environment they operate in.
Organisers are hoping that businesses will be sufficiently enlightened to continue the energy-saving practice after the installations are gone.
Enigin Distributors worldwide are helping businesses and organisations to use energy efficient lighting and lighting controls by installing such products as Enigin PLC's LESS (Light Energy Saver System) range, which often saves 30, 40 or even 50 percent of the energy used for commercial or industrial lighting.
