Enigin Update - EU-Russia to Cooperate on Energy Efficiency
THE European Union-Russia summit held at Rostov-on-Don in Russia this past Monday and Tuesday had energy as an important part of the agenda.
At the post-talks press-conference European Commission (EC) president Jose Manuel Barroso stated:
“We have discussed cooperation in terms of energy, energy security and energy efficiency, and this is the reason why the EU is a very strong supporter of Russia's accession to the WTO. We have always backed Russia's bid strongly."
Apart from vital international issues the summit also launched the new "partnership for modernization" with energy efficiency a key theme.
A European Commission statement after the summit revealed:
“The leaders gave their backing to an EU-Russia partnership for modernization and agreed a joint statement setting out the main priority areas for future work.”
Russia's President Medvedev commented:
"We are already seeing fruits through partnership of cooperation with Europe, for example on energy efficiency. We have a number of EU companies in this country dealing with energy efficiency. We have a very energy intensive economy and we should use EU experience to reduce this."
