Enigin Update - Energy Efficiency Twice the Impact of Clean Energy
THE International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that energy efficiency will achieve 65% of the worldwide carbon cuts in the energy sector by 2020. Meaning that by 2020 energy efficiency could have almost twice the impact of renewable energy, nuclear power and clean coal will have, combined. The IEA is an intergovernmental organisation which acts as energy policy advisor for the 28 member countries in their effort to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for their citizens.
For instance the Energy Efficiency Council (EEC) of Australia, released a report last month entitled Energy Efficiency: Australia's Low Carbon Opportunity, where they revealed that Australian electricity prices are about to rise up to 42% in the next three years, as energy utilities gear up to spend $40 billion Australian dollars over the next five years. This is a cost that could be reduced if energy efficiency is given more importance and acted upon.
For example, one company have discovered they can save so much energy at just one of their plants that would equal powering 100,000 homes. The report also notes that "just 220 companies, mainly in manufacturing, mining, and construction, use more than 40% of the energy consumed in Australia."
Two of the seven actions planned by the EEC cutting energy use by 20% in businesses by 2020 and introducing a National Efficiency Scheme (NES).
