Enigin Update - Energy Efficiency Building Code for Syria

Enigin Update - Energy Efficiency Building Code for Syria

SYRIA and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) yesterday announced they have teamed up to produce an energy efficiency building code document for the middle east country.

The project aims at reducing CO2 emission in buildings through the new code, which will focus on a buildings performance, including efficiency standards for energy consumption and the standards for energy-saving products and capacity building.

The total cost of the project is estimated at over $15 million, with the Syrian government providing $11.5 million as a contribution and the Global Environment Facility contributing by just under $3.46 million while the UNDP will offer almost $124,000.

The Syrian Minister of Electricity, Ahmad Qussai Kayali, explained the urgency of the project: "energy demand in 2009 reached to 23 million tons of oil equivalent compared to 16 million tons in 2000 with an annual growth above 5 percent.

Kayali added that energy demand is expected to reach more than 65 million tons in 2030 whereas only 25 million can be produced locally, leading to energy security and energy consistency concerns.

He also said that energy consumption in 2009 exceeded 40 percent, adding that raising energy use efficiency will help reduce the energy consumption of buildings by up to 20 percent.
The programme provides for carrying out 15 pilot projects throughout the Syrian provinces.

In turn, Ismael Wild al-Sheikh Ahmed, the UNDP Resident Representative, said the project will have a positive impact on the electricity sector as well as sustainable development, energy and environment, adding that the project reflects the Syrian government's commitment to international conventions on reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption.

Enigin Distributors in the region can help with upgrading existing buildings with energy saving technology form Enigin, or provide solutions for new builds to allow business owners, decision makers and landlords to enjoy the environmental and financial benefits of energy efficiency.
