Enigin Update - East Asia Promotes Energy Efficiency to Combat Climate Change

THE World Economic Forum for East Asia, on 7th June, discussed how Asia can promote green technology for energy efficiency. The issue called for the participation of representatives from the Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and the leaders of big businesses.

Asia is a key point for the world’s economic growth, due to the strong and rapid development in the region but is very vulnerable to climate change. Therefore, a sustainable environmental campaign needs to be promoted in the region. Some Asian countries have begun changing their targets towards saving energy, such as the RoK and Japan. Others have committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by transferring to energy efficient technology.

The RoK’s Deputy Minister of Environment said the country has invested US$30 billion into energy saving considering it a stimulus towards environmentally friendly projects. In 2009 the RoK achieved growth in energy efficiency and is expected to obtain a further growth of 5% this year. It also aims to cut CO2¬ exhaustion by 30% by 2020.

Vietnam is of the five countries seriously affected by climate change, so green growth has become an important issue. In 2008, the Government came up with several programmes to cope with global climate change.

At the forum, a Vietnamese representative from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment said the Government set up a Steering Board for Coping with Climate Change, presided over by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. The Ministry has asked other relevant ministries and localities to develop their own plans to deal with the issue.

Big businesses in Asia have committed to saving energy in production as well as creating environmentally friendly products. Businesses hope that the governments will create the best conditions for them to apply green technology in production, become energy efficient and save the country energy.

Enigin Distributors across East-Asia are well placed to help governments and businesses become energy efficient and reduce the impact of climate change.
